These are some of the most frequently asked publishing questions. For further support you can contact us.
How will SYS support me though the publishing process?
Our preferred online publishing tool is very user friendly. There are information videos on every aspect of publishing. If you are still stuck, you can email us or give us a call. Better yet, we can create the entire book for you.
How do I know if I will be happy with my book?
SYS will send you a formatted PDF draft. You will have the opportunity to proofread and send through changes. Three drafts are complimentary. You may also request a hard copy proof (charges may apply).
Are there any hidden costs?
No, the only costs that may vary are delivery and editing. Delivery is based on weight and distance. You will be given a delivery estimate upon request. Included in the price are 3 drafts. Additional drafts are rarely required, but fees apply. Check out our pricing calculator or contact us for a free quote.
How long does it take to print the books?
All books are printed in Australia. When you approve the FINAL pre-press proof, printing takes 2-3 weeks. Allow an additional week for delivery. In a hurry? Let us know and we may be able to fast track your books.
Can I include images?
Absolutely! You can include images of artwork, family photos, foodie pics, sport action shots and stage production or dance photos to name a few. SYS also has a large library of stock photos that we can add to your publication.
How many volunteer hours are needed?
How long is a piece of string? You can create the entire book yourself, or allow us to do it all for you. The most time consuming part would be proofreading, but that also depends on the length of your book. Book distribution also depends on the size of your organisation.
What are the copyright laws for recipes?
If inspired by a particular chef, it is always a nice/preferred gesture for the recipe submitter to include their source, but it is not a legal requirement. Here is an explanation of the Australian copyright laws regarding recipes.
The Copyright Act 1968 protects original expression of ideas, but not purely the idea itself. Once an idea or creative concept is documented, it is automatically protected by copyright in Australia. In relation to a recipe, copyright can protect a recipe documented in a book in the way it’s written, but not the way it’s made. Therefore, copyright does not extend to recipes if they are for the concept of something well known and reproduced (e.g. pasta or blueberry muffins). If you publish a recipe book you also cannot prevent others making the dish or people writing their own descriptions of how to make it. Nor can you prevent someone publishing their version of your recipe.
